Update: Interview on cinematography

I did a pretty long and detailed interview on Reddit covering a lot of my thoughts on cinematography, my background and so on! 12,000 words long so make a cup of coffee first…

Cinematography

I’m a professional cinematographer with over seven years experience shooting everything from dramas to glossy corporate films. I’ve worked with award-winning directors and writers, and spent three years running my own production company in the Midlands. I’m now a busy freelancer working across the UK and internationally.

Producers and directors choose me to shoot their projects for my consistent can-do attitude and enthusiasm, and my ability to achieve a wide range of styles and looks whatever the budget.

Today’s cinematographer has to be much more flexible in approach than in previous decades, and I’m adept at moving from cinema-standard productions with budgets in the hundreds of thousands with a full size crew, to more intimate productions with just the director and me, using the latest in lightweight cameras.

Editing

I’ve been editing for nearly as long as I’ve been shooting.  With my own edit suite at home as well as a Final Cut Pro enabled high spec laptop for working in the field, I can combine the roles of cinematographer and editor.  Shooting all day and being able to review a draft edit over breakfast the next morning in the hotel can be a huge boon on short turnarounds, and the client benefits from the “editor” having an intimate knowledge of every shot even before the edit begins.

Project Management

My time running a production company means I can also take on project management duties – putting together all the nuts and bolts of the production on your behalf, drawing on my extensive list of industry contacts.  You get the best people and equipment, and a tremendous amount of time saved.
